EC registers 79 political parties for local election

Refuses to register Rishi Kattel’s party citing documents

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has registered 79 political parties willing to take part in the upcoming local election.

According to EC spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel, out of 80 parties that applied for registration, only 79 parties have been registered.

He informed that EC did not register one political party led by Rishi Kattel as it did not meet the requirements set for party registration.

Supreme Court’s verdict on name related writ filed by Kattel had led to the dismissal of erstwhile ruling Nepal Communist Party and made room for the ruling communist party’s legal split.

Earlier, EC called for the political parties willing to take part in the upcoming local election scheduled for May 13 for the formal registration.
