KATHMANDU: The number of active cases of COVID19 has nearly doubled in the past week in the country.
Nepal had only 5,094 active cases last Tuesday whereas the number of active cases stands at 9,522 today.
As the number of daily count of COVID19 cases rose, the number of active cases also increased this past week. As many as 2,444 new virus cases have been detected today against the 393 infections recorded last Tuesday.
It is to be noted that the recent spread of Omicron variant at the community level has resulted in exponential rise in number of virus cases in the country. This number is likely to skyrocket given the Omicron variant is more transmissible than other variants. The number of daily virus cases is expected to hit its peak by mid-January in Nepal.
Experts predict the possibility of the third wave of coronavirus in the country in view of the recent rise in rate of infections. The government needs to be proactive to prevent and control the third wave of COVID19, they have stressed.
Concluding that the infections were bound to rise further, the government shut schools in the country till January 29, starting today.
Meanwhile, a joint meeting of the Chief District Officers (CDOs) of the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley today itself decided to restrict gathering of over 25 people in public places of the valley. Also, vaccine cards are mandatory for entry into public places such as hotels, restaurants, public offices, airports, cinema halls, stadiums, among others, from January 21. Likewise, service seekers won’t avail government services unless they produce a vaccine card.
