Argentina will now face Croatia in the World Cup semi-final on 13 December.
The Argentines faced a long, hard-fought tactical game that saw the best of Messi.
The game was equal from the start, with both teams canceling each other out all the way to minute 120.
Argentina defeated the Netherlands in the penalties 4-3.
