If the term of parliament is not for 5 years, there may be a crisis in the country: Dev Gurung

KATHMANDU: CPM-Maoist Center chief whip in the House of Representatives, Dev Gurung, has demanded to enact a law that ensures the full 5-year term of parliament.

Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Wednesday,  Maoist Center leader Gurung said that although the election date was announced for November 20, there was still a debate about the tenure of the House of Representatives.

Citing provision 85 (1) of the Constitution, he said that the Constitution states that the term of the House of Representatives shall be 5 years and added that the order of the Supreme Court also states that the term of the Parliament should not be reduced to less than 5 years.

“This is not even a mid-term election neither the election has become a must to hold the election due to the failure of the government as provision in Article 76 (5) of the Constitution,” leader Gurung said, adding, “Therefore, an Act is needed for this election agenda.”

He warned that the serious lapses in the issue of abiding by the Constitution provided such arrangements are made.
