Communism, poverty and terrorism adding to human rights challenges

KATHMANDU: Speakers at an interaction in Kathmandu expressed concern that poverty, terrorism and communism were adding to human rights challenges around the world.

Speaking at an interaction on ‘International Challenges to Democracy and Human Rights’ held at Patan Multiple Campus in Bagbazar, Kathmandu, speakers expressed such concerns.

The interaction was organized by the Nepal Democratic Union on the occasion of the 87th birthday of the Dalai Lama.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vijay Mishra, Associate Professor of Patan Multiple Campus, said the protection of human rights in the world has been challenged due to the so-called democrats pursuing power and vested interests instead of focusing on people’s rights.

Similarly, Professor Kapil Shrestha claimed human rights was in crisis as the ruling parties abused state power for personal gains and largely neglected the need of the people.

Advocate Jhalak Bik and Dr. Saroj Mishra also expressed their views at the event.

Siddharth Gautam, President of the Nepal Democratic Union, said that Chinese Communists’ interference had put democracy and human rights in peril in Nepal.

Hundreds of people participated in the interaction and a birthday cake was cut to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s birthday.
