Initiative to conclude citizenship Act amendment with consensus: Minister Khand

KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs, Bal Krishna Khand, has said that the government has been taking initiative to take the amendment of Nepal Citizenship Act-2063 to a conclusion with consensus.

During a discussion with representatives of federal parliament held at the Home Ministry regarding amendment of Nepal Citizenship Act-2063, Home Minister Khand shared that discussion has been forwarded in order to take it to the conclusion by addressing differing opinions.

The Home Ministry held discussion with lawmakers today while there is still dispute among political parties regarding the bill designed to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act 2063.

On the occasion, lawmakers suggested to pass the bill on the basis of consensus by holding discussion with top leadership of political parties as the issue is related with general people.

In response, Home Minister Khand said that the government has been making maximum efforts to forge consensus in this regard.

He further said that there should be common responsibility of all on the sensitive matter like citizenship.

Similarly, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dilendra Prasad Badu, said that a report on the bill has been prepared comprising different opinion.

He added that the report on the bill has been prepared with a provision of further punishment to those submitting false details to get citizenship.

Law Minister Badu suggested to finalize the issue with consensus by holding discussion in top-level rather than making the some provision of citizenship bill as the matter of dispute.

Likewise, Attorney General, Khamba Bahadur Khati said that it was not necessary to hold the bill and urged to pass the bill as soon as possible from the parliament. Lawmakers—Krishna Bhakta Pokharel, Dev Gurung, Pushpa Bhusal and Jeevan Ram Shrestha expressed their views on the bill.
