KATHMANDU: Top leaders of the ruling coalition Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN-Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal have met at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Thursday.
According to Prime Minister Deuba’s press coordinator Govinda Pariyar, the top three leaders of ruling coalition met at PM’s official residence in Baluwatar for about an hour on Thursday morning.
Dahal and Nepal reached in Baluwatar at around 10.30 am for the meeting with the Prime Minister.
With the deadline to ratify MCC from Nepal’s parliament coming near, the leaders have been meeting much frequently to make a consensus in the ruling coalition.
In the meeting, PM Deuba proposed to the two leaders of the ruling coalition to help him table the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) for voting in the parliament. However, Nepal and Dahal were adamant about amending the US grant before tabling in the parliament.
Earlier, there had been a talk between Prachanda and NC leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala. Dr. Koirala had reached Prachanda’s residence in Khumaltar on Thursday morning.
According to NC leader Amresh Kumar Singh, Dahal and Koirala discussed the US-grant Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the alliance in local elections.
Earlier, Prime Minister Deuba and Maoist Chairman Dahal had written a joint letter to the MCC promising to get the MCC ratified by the parliament by February 28.
However, Maoist Chairman Dahal has backtracked on that commitment.
Meanwhile, the US aid project Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has announced that it will withdraw if the agreement is not passed by Nepal’s parliament by February 28.
Speaking in a virtual interaction on Wednesday evening, MCC Vice President Fatima Sumar said that the next three weeks are very important for the implementation of MCC in Nepal.
She clarified that the deadline could not be extended again as it was set by Nepal itself. She also ruled out the possibility of making any change in the compact itself.
