UML lawmakers raise concerns against TU padlock

KATHMANDU: The Tribhuvan University (TU), the grand old and biggest university in the country, is padlocked for months under different pretexts, leading to chaos in the university instead of academic activities.

Fear looms large about the abyss of anarchy in the university as stakeholders remain apathetic to the TU’s sorry state of affairs.

At the same time, university management and officials have been heavily criticized for paying poor attention to unlock the padlock in the TU.

The issue of padlock at the TU was also raised in Thursday’s parliament meeting with top priority from the MPs.

The MPs have drawn attention of the government asking whether the university is a knowledge sharing institution or a stage for protests.

Taking part in the deliberation in the Appropriation Bill 2079 BS, lawmakers Rajendra Gautam and Yogesh Bhattarai asked when are we getting rid of the culture of padlocking the university.

Bhattarai also asked the government for an appropriate remedy of the padlock that is spreading in the universities.

Likewise, MP Ghanshyam Khatiwada asked when the incidents of padlock in TU and Nepal Sanskrit University that are taking place for five months and one month, respectively, will end.
