KATHMANDU: Police fired six rounds of tear gas shells and arrested at least 18 locals of Bancharedanda who pelted stones at the police on Wednesday.

At least six policemen were injured in the clash between the locals and the police at Bancharedanda in Nuwakot district.

Despite an agreement reached at the Ministry of Urban Development on Monday night to allow garbage to be dumped in Bancharedanda, locals obstructed smooth movement of the trucks carrying garbage from Kathmandu.

On Tuesday, garbage trucks were unloaded at Bancharedanda with the help of security personnel.

More than 200 police personnel were mobilized at Bancharedanda to ensure the smooth passage of trucks carrying garbage from Kathmandu.

Police used force after the locals did not allow them to dump the garbage.

The situation became tense in the area following the locals’ obstruction, according to Santosh Singh Rathore, Superintendent of Police.

He said that police used force after the locals pelted stones at them.

Locals of Bancharedanda have been obstructing the dumping site despite an agreement being reached between the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Urban Development and the people’s representatives of Kathmandu, Dhading and Nuwakot.
