Election code of conduct to come into force from today midnight



KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) is making preparations to implement the election code of conduct for the upcoming local level elections from today midnight.

The EC is imposing the code of conduct today after political parties and other stakeholders expressed commitment in writing to comply with the code of conduct.

“We are implementing the election code of conduct after from today midnight once all the concerned stakeholders expressed commitment in writing to abide by the code of conduct,” said the sources.

The code of conduct will be implemented to hold the upcoming local level elections in a free, fair and transparent manner.

It is applicable to the government, constitutional bodies, semi-governmental organizations, political parties, candidates, public servants, media, observers, non-governmental organizations, schools, teachers, and voters.

Once the code of conduct comes into force, no budget can be allotted for carrying out any activities including inauguration and survey.

It will also restrict transfers of government employees, appointments, among others.

A source at the Election Commission said a meeting of the EC to be held today will take an official decision to impose the election code of conduct from today midnight.

Meanwhile, the Commission has been holding interactions in the capitals of all the seven provinces including Nepal-India borders to check the violations of the election code of conduct by the candidates.
