Women leaders call for 50% of seats in local polls



KATHMANDU: Women leaders have called for 50 percent of seats in the major posts in the upcoming local level elections.

The women leaders and the office-bearers of the National Women Commission have put forth such a demand which the local election already scheduled for May 13.

Nepali Congress leader Pushpa Bhushal said that the logical participation should be ensured in the upcoming local level elections.

With the capacity of women already developed, 50 percent of major posts including mayors, chiefs of rural municipalities of ward chairmen should be allocated for them, said Bhusal.

Sher further said that the campaign of ensuring 50 percent of major posts in the local level elections for women leaders has already started.

Election Commission has to pile pressure on political parties to allocate 50 percent of seats for women, she said.
