KATHMANDU: The meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) scheduled for 1 pm Wednesday has been postponed till the next week.
The Parliament Secretariat said the HoR meeting was postponed due to special reasons.
Issuing a notice late Tuesday, the Parliament Secretariat informed that the HoR meeting has been rescheduled for 1 pm a week later on February 14.
This postponement comes as the government prepared to forward the agenda of US grant Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact at the Business Advisory Committee (BAC). Earlier today, the Parliament Secretariat called a BAC meeting for 11:30 am Wednesday to discuss the agenda of HoR sitting.
Speaker Agni Sapkota has been hindering the government’s efforts to move the MCC forward on various pretexts.
Meanwhile, the CPN-Maoist Center had sought time from Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to decide on MCC. The Maoists Central Committee is to decide on the issue on February 11.
In a meeting between Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affair Dilendra Badu and Speaker Sapkota, the latter told the former that it was not up to him to forward MCC.
A few of the ruling coalition leaders are employing delay tactics after Prime Minister Deuba became adamant about finalizing the passage of MCC regardless of differences with coalition partners.
On the other hand, the UML is not taking any sides on MCC and has demanded that the government be clear of its position first. UML leaders have also been encouraging the idea of impeaching Speaker Sapkota to ensure smooth functioning of the parliament.
