KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has halted the work of updating the voter list.
With the local levels elections slated for May 13 on Monday, the commission decided to stop the collection of voters’ details from Tuesday. However, the data of voters collected on Monday would be valid, the EC said.
There is a legal provision that the voter list cannot be updated following the announcement of elections.
An EC meeting on Monday issued a circular to all district election offices across the country to halt the work of collecting details of voters from Tuesday.
The voter list updated so far would be published at the ward level by the EC and complaints would be sought. After dealing with the complaints, the final voters’ list would be published. Only voters making it to the final list will be able to vote in the upcoming local level elections on May 13.
The EC estimated that around 35 to 40 days would be required to wrap up the overall work.
