Law Minister Badu and Speaker Sapkota hold discussion on MCC, impasse in parliament

KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dilendra Prasad Badu and Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota have discussed tabling the United States grant Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in the parliament that has been obstructed for long.

The meeting was held at the Speaker’s office at Parliament Secretariat in Singha Durbar, Kathmandu, Sunday.

The two discussed presenting MCC in parliament and convening a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) for the same. Minister Badu urged Speaker Sapkota to allow tabling the MCC Nepal Compact.

“Speaker Sapkota and Law Minister Badu held talks on resuming the obstructed parliament and convening a BAC meeting, including MCC,” said Keshav Bhandari, a member of Minister Badu’s Secretariat.

Conveying the Law Minister that the environment was not favorable for debates and smooth running of the parliament, Speaker Sapkota stressed both the government and the parties should play a role in resuming regular business of the parliament.

“The discussion between Speaker and Law Minister was focused on resuming the obstructed parliament,” said Shridhar Neupane, the speaker’s press expert. “The Speaker conveyed the government that both the parties and the government had to work hand in hand to resume functions of the parliament.”
