Ruling coalition making MCC controversial: UML leader Gyawali

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Pradip Kumar Gyawali has said the ruling coalition had made the United States-backed Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact controversial.

Leader Gyawali said the parties in the coalition had stalled MCC by saying one thing to the United States and another to the Nepali people.

Speaking at a press conference held by Press Chautari Rupandehi in Butwal Sunday, he remarked that the MCC agreement was inked when the Nepali Congress (NC) and Maoist Center were in a coalition government but today when both the parties are again in government MCC has become more controversial than ever.

“The double role played by Maoist leaders, in particular in relation to MCC, has affected Nepal’s image in the international arena,” Gyawali said. “On one hand, they say to the US they would pass the compact in five months, and on the other, they tell Nepali people the compact won’t be passed without amendment?” He said that those who signed the agreement should admit their mistake if there are anti-national provisions in the MCC.

Reiterating that the MCC should be debated in the parliament, Gyawali said the UML would make its formal position public only after MCC is tabled in the parliament. He said MCC should not be made a matter of power sharing in a dark room.

He also said Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota should not be allowed to block MCC in the parliament. He also remarked that the role of the speaker was disputed.
