KATHMANDU: CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has proposed to select office bearers through consensus, thereby skipping voting process.

Maoist leaders are of the view that the issue of picking office bearers and formation of standing and politburo committees, among other party structures, should be finalized by the ongoing central committee meeting of the party.

A meeting was held among leaders at Maoist Center’s central office in Parisdanda, Koteshwor, on Tuesday morning.

After the majority of leaders favored finalizing office bearers at the earliest, Chairman Prachanda put forth a condition in which the party would not hold a vote even if differences arise.

A Maoist leader said Prachanda proposed he would nominate office member and even if leaders do not agree on his nomination, the party should finalize office bearers’ selection through consensus instead of holding a vote.

Former Standing Committee member Ganesh Sah said the meeting entrusted Chair Prachanda to propose members of office bearers, Standing Committee and Politburo.

The ongoing meeting of the Central Committee has been adjourned till 1 pm tomorrow, Wednesday, after the meeting of the Central Office stretched longer than anticipated.

The 8th General Convention of the Maoist Center held in December 2021 ran for eight days and concluded in January 2, 2022.

The general convention had elected 236 out of 299 central members, who are to pick the remaining central members, party’s Politburo, Standing Committee, and office-bearers.

The Maoists have 15 office-bearers, including chairman.  On January 3, 2022, the new central committee of the Maoist Center comprising 236 central members had re-elected Prachanda as Maoist Chair.

The remaining office bearers are yet to be elected and party structures yet to be formed even as six months have passed since the general convention.
