EC communiqué to government to shut down international borders

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has written to the Government of Nepal to close all international border crossings 48 hours prior to polling day.

The border transit points are to remain shut until polling is completed so as to complete the administrative work of the local level election 2022 in a free, fair, safe and fearless environment.

A meeting of the EC office-bearers on Thursday decided to send a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Nepal, to close the international border points from mid-night on Tuesday, May 10, and to stop all domestic traffic on polling day, said EC spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel.

Similarly, for the effective implementation of the provisions of Section 71 (Prohibition of Alcohol) of the Local Level Election Directives, 2022, the EC will send a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs to strictly prohibit the sale, distribution and consumption of alcohol in the designated areas from midnight on May 10 until the polling is completed.
