Flood, landslide disrupt rural roads in Khotang

KHOTANG: All rural roads in Khotang district have been disrupted due to flood and landslide following the continuous rainfall for the past few days.

Passengers travelling to and from Diketl bazaar and districts of Tarai region are compelled to walk four hours in order to reach their destinations.

Although transport service is operated in all 10 local levels of the district during winter season, only Diktel-Kathmandu, Diktel-Itahari- Biratnagar and Diktel-Bhojpur are now in operation, said General-Secretary of Khotang Transport Pvt Ltd, Ram Kumar Hingman.

He shared, “All the fair weather roads in the district are disrupted due to heavy rains. It is necessary to blacktop the roads to make them all weather roads.”

Diktel-Baksila, Diktel-Aiselukharka, Diktel-Patheka, Diktel-Mattim-Panchami and Diktek-Regmitar-Rasuwa roads have been completely damaged- somewhere subsided, somewhere obstructed with landslips.

Transport entrepreneurs complained that the bodies concerned did not pay attention to repair and reconstruct the damaged rural roads. There is no condition to bring the obstructed rural roads into operation before Dashain.

The blacktopped Diktel-Gaighat road section linking Tarai districts under the Sagarmath Highway has also been obstructed due to continuous rainfall. The obstruction of road has created problem in supply of daily essentials.

Chief of Jantedhunga Rural Municipality, Aruna Devi Rai, said efforts were on to resume the roads but the continuous rainfall hindered the efforts.
