Relieve us of garbage smell, Sisdole people’s representatives urge KMC Mayor

KATHMANDU: People’s representatives of Sisdole in Nuwakot have urged the newly elected leadership of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) to relieve them of foul smell.

The site has been used as a dumping site for solid waste collected from 18 local levels in the Kathmandu Valley for years.

During a meeting with Kathmandu Metropolis Mayor Balendra Shah and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol on Friday, the local representatives said the Sisdole folks were also humans and deserved humane treatment.

Citing that denial to take notice of the voices of locals would further fuel the problem, Kakani Rural Municipality-3 Chair Ghananath Bajgain urged the KMC leadership to take their issues seriously and address them on time.

The locals accused the State of never seeking a sustainable way of waste management.

In response, the mayor said that the team had met with the Minister for Urban Development on Tuesday regarding the issues of Sisdole folks and assured of a long-term solution to the problem in cooperation with the Ministry and the metropolis.

He presented the idea of using chemicals to treat odors from garbage collection at Sisdole as the immediate action and said no force would be exercised for the management of waste from the Valley in Sisdole. “It will be carried out in cooperation with the Sisdole folks.”

It may be noted the waste collection in the Kathmandu Valley has remained suspended for a week due to the obstruction from the Sisdole folks.
