Local Level Election: 353 candidates win unopposed

KATHMANDU: Of the total nominees for the May 13 local level polls, 353 candidates have been elected unopposed in various municipal positions across the country, Assistant Spokesperson of Election Commission (EC) Surya Prasad Aryal said.

Nominations for the local level polls were received on April 24 and 25 and the final name-list of the candidates was released on April 30.

Those elected unopposed would receive their certificates from the Office of the Election Officer after the completion of the vote count.

Meanwhile, the EC said its serious attention was drawn to the warning issued from the Internet Service Provider’s Association of Nepal to suspend the internet service from the next week.

“In the present age of information and technology, accessible and unhindered access to internet service is like citizen’s basic need. The EC wants to draw attention of the stakeholders towards the obstruction of citizen’s right to information and freedom of expression if the internet service was shut down,” read a press statement released by the EC.

Likewise, the EC directed the Ministry of Communications and Information and concerned sides to create environment favorable for regular supply of internet service during the time of election.

Similarly, the EC said a total of 13.22 million ballots have been transported to 64 districts so far.

The EC said preparations are ongoing to complete the transportation of the ballot paper within May 6.
