14 leaders of ‘above 70 category’ get elected in HoR

KATHMANDU: Although the issue of transformation of power and representation of the young generation was strongly raised in the general election, 14 leaders above70 years have managed to get elected to the post of House of Representatives (HoR) member this time as well.

There are 165 HoR member seats under first-past-the-post system of election.

The 70-year-old group of newly elected members of HoR comprises the leaders from all main streaming parties including Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Center, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).

NC got its President Sher Bahadur Deuba, 77 years, elected from Dadeldhura, 78-year-old leader Ramchandra Poudel from Tanahun-1, 75-year-old Arjun Narsingh KC from Nuwakot-2, 73-year-old Dr. Narayan Khadka from Udayapur-1, and 72-year-old Dr. Shekhar Koirala from Morang-6.

Similarly, UML got its Chairman KP Oli, 70 years, and 77-year-old Mangal Prasad Gupta elected from Jhapa-5 and Kapilvastu-3, respectively. Maoist Center leader Mahendra Ray Yadav, 77 years, came from Sarlahi-2.

Nawalkishore Shah Sudi, 73 years, got elected from JSP whereas RPP got Deepak Bohora, 71 years, and Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, 70 years, elected from Rupandehi-3 and Nawalparasi West-2 respectively.

Likewise, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party has got two old leaders elected, namely, 80-year-old Mahant Thakur from Mahottari-3, and 72-year-old Sarbendranath Shukla from Rupandehi-4.

Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal, which got only one victory in the HoR, got 80-year-old Chitra Bahadur KC elected from Baglung-1.
