Tension as royalists try to install late King Birendra’s statue in Nepalgunj

BANKE: Tension has flared up at Dhamboji Chowk in Nepalgunj of Banke.

The tensions arose after the police administration intervened in an attempt to keep a statue of the late King Birendra.

Police have also opened fires in the air and tear gas shells to control the situation.

Birendra’s statue at Dhamboji Chowk was vandalized during the People’s Movement of 2062/63 BS.

Following the movement, the statue of Birendra was replaced by a national flag.

Some independent activists, nationalist youth groups, and RPP leaders and activists had gathered at the place today to restore the statue of Birendra, referring to the day of the Durbar massacre.

No sooner the group tried to install Birendra’s statue, than the police intervened in the act of installation.

According to RPP Deputy General Secretary Rishi Raj Devkota, some youths have sustained injuries in the clash.
