Disgruntled AIGs Pokharel and Thapa lodge writs against govt over IGP appointment

KATHMANDU: Two Additional Generals of Nepal Police have moved the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the government’s decision to appoint Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) today.

Disgruntled AIG duo Bishwo Raj Pokharel and Sahakul Thapa lodged the writ petitions at the apex court demanding that the government’s decision to appoint Singh as IGP be scrapped.

The registration process of the writ petitions is underway, according to the apex court.

A cabinet meeting held on Sunday had appointed AIG Singh who was third in seniority to the top post of the Nepal Police even though the promotion recommendation committee of the Home Ministry had recommended AIG Pokharel for promotion.

The writ petition has been filed arguing that the government promoted Singh, who was third in seniority, by breaching the existing rules and system.

Giving justification for the government’s decision to appoint Singh as IGP, Home Secretary Tek Narayan Pandey said that seniority is not always the basis for the appointment of the IGP.

“There are other factors such as merit and the country’s need that are taken into consideration while taking a decision to appoint an IGP,” Pandey said.
