AIGs Pokhrel, Thapa prepare to move court against Singh’s promotion to IGP

KATHMANDU: Two Additional Inspector Generals (AIGs) are preparing to move court against the government decision to promote AIG Dhiraj Pratap Singh to the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

AIGs Bishwaraj Pokhrel and Sahakul Bahadur Thapa have been holding discussions to move the court after Sunday’s cabinet appointed Singh as IGP.

Singh became AIG a year after Pokhrel and Thapa had become AIGs.

Pokhrel and Thapa are of the view that one of them ought to be AIG on the basis of seniority and performance instead of Singh, who is junior than them.

AIG Pokhrel figured on the top of Home Ministry’s recommendation list for the IGP post. However, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba opted Singh from among the recommended AIGs.

Prime Minister Deuba and Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand locked horns over the appointment of IGP. Home Minister Khand preferred Pokhrel to be promoted to IGP but Singh was Deuba’s choice.

The appointment of IGP also divided top leaders of the five-party alliance.

Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ backed PM Deuba whereas CPN-Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal supported Home Minister Khand.

After the leaders failed to reach an agreement on the appointment of an IGP, Prime Minister Deuba unilaterally took the decision to promote Singh to the top post of Nepal Police.
