Government declares public holiday on Sonam Lhosar

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to give a public holiday to all government offices and public institutions across the country on the occasion of the Sonam Lhosar and Nwagi festivals on Wednesday.

The Sonam Lhosar is a special festival celebrated by the Tamang community and the Nwagi is the major festival observed by the Chepang community.

Under Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Basanta Bhattarai has issued a statement today stating that the public holiday has been granted as per the decision of the Council of Ministers on January 30.

Similarly, a meeting of the Bagmati province’s Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers on Monday decided to give a public holiday in the province on the occasion of the two festivals, government spokesperson and minister for internal affairs and law, Krishna Prasad Sharma Khanal said.

According to him, there would be a public holiday in all the 13 districts of the province on Wednesday on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar while only three districts, namely Makawanpur, Chitwan, and Dhading, the districts which have Chepang settlements, would have a public holiday on the occasion of the Nwagi festival.

Similarly, the Bagmati Rural Municipality, Raksirang Rural Municipality, and Bakaiya Rural Municipality of Makwanpur district have announced a public holiday on the occasion of the Sonam Lhosar festival.
