Farmers movement gaining traction in Tarai districts



KATHMANDU: The farmers’ movement is gaining traction in Tarai districts of late.

Demonstrations continued in several districts, including Kathmandu, Bardia, Banke, Kapilbastu, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Siraha, Saptari, Sunsari and Morang, on Saturday as well, as part of the movement.

The demonstration was also held at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu.

Similarly, four farmers sustained injury and two were arrested following a clash with police in Chandranigahapur of Rautahat today. Likewise, farmers burned the effigy of the Agriculture Minister in Siraha. In Rupandehi, farmers threw wheat on the road to protest and a clash occurred in Kanchanpur too.

Farmers also obstructed the East-West Highway in several Tarai districts.

A ‘Farmers Movement’ is ongoing across several Tarai districts putting forth a charter of demands to address the plights of farmers across the country.

Farmers have demanded the formation of a high-level committee to address their issues, timely arrangement of compost and seeds for them, ensuring irrigation systems, determination of fair support price of crops, issued identity cards ‘Kisan cards’ to them, among others.
