Citing Sikkim annexation, RPP chair Lingden reiterates the need for monarchy

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden has reiterated the need for reinstating the institution of monarchy in the country.

Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on Wednesday in memory of late King Birendra, RPP Chair Lingden cited the example of Sikkim merger and said that the need for a monarchy has increased of late.

“Sikkim was merged in another country at the absence of monarchy, Nepal is facing similar threat now,” the RPP Chair said, adding, “Only monarchy can safeguard national integrity and promote national interest.”

Lingden remarked that King Birendra had established himself as a constitutional king in 1990s by signing an agreement with the leaders of political parties to prevent the country from going under foreign shadows.

“Sikkim is in Sikkim. But Sikkim is not a country. Our country is facing the same danger in recent days. For that, I would say that the monarchy is needed in the context of Nepal, ”he said.

He recalled that the late King Birendra was a lover of the people and a patriotic king.
