UML sees candidacy of 30 excess leaders not included in Chair Oli’s list vying for post of central members

KATHMANDU: Outgoing Chairperson of CPN-UML KP Oli had recommended 301 names of central member to be elected in the party’s 10th general convention, which is underway in Sauraha, Chitwan. However, the party has to go for election as over 30 candidates, not in Chair Oli-proposed list, have filed candidacy for the post of central members.

According to the UML’s statute, a quota of nine people, including six men and three women, has been fixed in each province. Accordingly, Oli had recommended nine people in each province.

However, the UML Central Election Commission stated that the number of candidates from each province has exceeded the quota prescribed by the party legislature. In province 1, there are 12 candidates in the quota of 9 central members.

Similarly, Bagmati has 11 candidates for 9 seats and Karnali has 10 candidates. According to the party’s Central Election Commission, 15 candidates, including three men and three women, have been fielded for the nine seats in Sudurpaschim Province.

Likewise, even in the inclusive quota clusters, there are more candidates who have to go to the polls. There is a quota of two candidates in the liaison coordination cluster but three candidates have been fielded.

The UML Election Commission informed that 19 candidates filed candidacy in the open seat of Adivasi Janajati. Similarly, 9 candidates are contesting in the 8 seats for Janajati women.

In the Madhesi cluster, 15 candidates are contesting for 13 seats while 11 candidates are contesting for 8 seats in the Dalit cluster.

The UML constitution has fixed quota of five men and three women for Tharus. There is one extra candidate in this cluster too. On the Muslim side, there are 7 candidates for 5 seats and for 4 quotas, including women of backward areas, there are 6 candidates vying for the posts.
