HURPES urges Chief Justice Rana to resign

KATHMANDU: Human Rights and Peace Society, Nepal (HURPES) has demanded the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana for his alleged role in the power sharing in KP Oli-led government and Sher Bahadur Deuba government.

Issuing a press release on Friday, on behalf of the society, President Govinda Khanal demanded Chief Justice Rana’s resignation citing the growing protests seeking his resignation.

” There are intensified protest against Chief Justice Rana questioning his honesty and judicial conduct,” the statement read, “It is true that the Chief Justice has become more morally detached at a later stage. For this reason, on the one hand, most of the responsible persons and bodies in the judiciary have expressed serious concern over the impartiality of the court and demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice.”

HURPES remarked that the situation is unfortunate and the continuation of such status can lead to chaos and anarchy, which can be fatal to the democratic system and the judicial system.

The Society has held it the main responsibility of the Chief Justice to normalize this abnormal situation and asked Chief Justice Rana to step down from the post to end the confusion.

It has also urged all the political parties represented in the parliament to ensure the exit of the incumbent Chief Justice if the Chief Justice does not resign.

“There are many reasons behind such a situation in the judiciary, from the long-running unhealthy practices, rapid politicization, and the proliferation of middlemen,” HURPES said ahead alleging the major political parties also responsible for the current crisis at judiciary.
