KATHMANDU: The hearing on the writ related to the citizenship ordinance has been adjourned at the request of the request of the writ petitioner’s lawyer.

The Supreme Court had fixed the hearing of the writ petition in the Constitutional Bench.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and Justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Harikrishna Karki and Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada was constituted for the hearing.

The then government led by KP Oli had issued the ordinance on May 23, facilitating the citizenship acquiring process on the basis of descent.

The government had issued an ordinance to allow the then Janata Samajwadi Party’s Mahanta Thakur group (now the Democratic Socialist Party) to join the government.

Senior Advocate Borna Bahadur Karki, Advocate Bishnukumari Giri, Advocate Ram Bahadur Shahi, Advocate Kul Bahadur Bogati, Advocate Bir Bhadra Joshi and Deputy General Secretary Laxman Pokharel had filed a writ petition against the ordinance on behalf of the party.

However, the Constitutional Court issued an interim order in the name of the government, on June 10, not to implement the Citizenship Ordinance, saying that there was no judicial justification for its implementation.

The Council of Ministers had dissolved the House of Representatives in May and issued a controversial ordinance the next day after dissolution.
