KATHMANDU: The National Assembly, Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee has directed the government to give high priority to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and carry out works accordingly.

Committee president Taradevi Bhatta said after the meeting of the committee today that there should be discussion and monitoring of the progress made by the line ministries regarding the SDGs, the challenges, and the ways of resolving the problems to that connection.

She shared that the directives issued by the Committee would be followed upon.

The Committee meeting has decided to take initiatives towards meeting the SDGs through coordination among all the three tiers of the government, pointing out making the role of the local level more effective by localization of the SDGs. It also stressed fostering collaboration with the provinces for the attainment of the SDGs.

The committee meeting pledged to help localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through SDGs champions in the province and implement the COVID-19-hit Dhulikhel Declaration on the committee’s own initiatives.

This moves means to make the role of the parliament and the Province Assembly more effective.

On the occasion, the Committee members Bandev Gautam, Dinanath Sharma, Maya Prasad Sharma, and Ganga Kumari Belbase stressed the need for monitoring whether or not directions the committee has made in different times have been implemented and make the committee dynamic.

In the meeting, former Constituent Assembly member Janak Raj Joshi presented a working paper on a subject with the theme of ‘role of lawmakers in achieving SDGs’.
