Digital visas with QR codes introduced

KATHMANDU: The Department of Immigration has abolished handwritten visas and introduced modern visas with QR codes from Monday.

According to the department, Tenzing Norbu Lama of Portugal was the first to receive a QR code visa.

Director General of the department Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said the QR code was a state-of-the-art visa and it was being implemented as per an earlier decision to issue such visas.

Bhattarai said the details of the people in the department’s software can now be viewed by scanning the QR code. QR code visas are issued only from the department’s office in Kalikasthan for the time being and the service will expand to Tribhuvan International Airport and all other offices in the coming fiscal year.

According to him, visas with QR codes were issued to 125 people till 5 pm on the first day Monday. With the issuance of this type of visa, the possibility of being overwritten is eliminated.
