KATHMANDU: Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher Rana has reiterated that he does not see any reason to step down merely on the basis of “baseless allegations” and “street protests” against him.
“What I can only say is all allegations against me are purely baseless,” CJ Rana in an interview with Prime Television Thursday night dismissing “rumors of disputes within the judiciary.”
He said that he would exit only after completing the responsibilities bestowed by the Constitution and laws since he represents 30 million Nepali population. “Should I resign simply because a handful of people want me to step down?” he queried.
CJ Rana said there are elements that are hell-bent on tarnishing the image of the judiciary, which, he asserted would not tolerate at any cost. “The latest developments and disputes are aimed at tarnishing the judiciary’s image.”
The Chief Justice also said he was ready to face impeachment but not compromise for the sake of the judiciary.
He also dismissed allegations that corruption is rampant within the Supreme Court.
“These are mere accusations,” he said refuting claims that he has been involved in making controversial decisions as a Chief Justice.
“I have been reiterating time and again that the Constitution and law have entrusted me with the responsibilities and that I am capable to discharge the given responsibilities,” he asserted.
He also denied his involvement in bargaining in power-sharing, including appointments in the cabinet, constitutional bodies, and ambassadorial appointments.
“I have entirely no involvement in the appointment of Gajendra Hamal’s appointment in the cabinet despite being my brother-in-law,” he added.
He also dismissed rumors that he reinstated the House of Representatives coming under pressure from other justices or coming under political pressure.
“I was not against HoR reinstatement,” he said, adding, “The decision was purely constitutional and in favor of the people.”
