NEW DELHI: India has successfully test-fired a surface-to-surface ballistic missile, Agni-5, from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast on Wednesday evening, India Today has reported.
The missile, which uses a three-stage solid-fuelled engine, is capable of striking targets up to a 5,000-km range with a very high degree of accuracy, it said.
The successful launch aligns with India’s policy to have a “credible minimum deterrence” that underpins the commitment to ‘No First Use’, according to India Today report.
The successful test-firing of the missile, built by the Defence Research Development Organisation’s (DRDO), came in the midst of a lingering border standoff with China in eastern Ladakh, it added.
The first test of the missile was carried out in April 2012 while the previous one was reportedly conducted around three years ago.
