KATHMANDU: It has been revealed that as many as 26 Nepali women have been languishing in the prisons of Sri Lanka.

They landed in the jail while being taken to the Gulf countries by human traffickers. However, it is not yet known who took them and how they landed in the jail.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens said it is making preparations to recuse them. Earlier, the ministry had rescued 10 women from the Sri Lanka prison and handed them over to their family members.

According to Tekraj Niraula, the spokesperson at the ministry, the Nepali Embassy in Colombo is coordinating with the Sri Lanka government for their release.

Nirauala further said it is yet to be investigated how they landed in the prison and who trafficked them to Sri Lanka.

Human traffickers often lure Nepali women with promises of lucrative jobs in the Gulf countries, take them via land route of India and leave them stranded in Sri Lanka.
