KATHMANDU: The National Unity Campaign has held a demonstration against China in Kathmandu Monday.
The Campaign protested against the Chinese encroachment of Nepali land in Humla. Demonstrators also burned Chinese President Xi Jinping’s effigy at the Maitighar Mandal.

Vinay Yadav, Central Coordinator of the Campaign, said Nepali land was being encroached by China under various pretexts time and again. He demanded that the encroached Nepali land be returned as soon as possible.
He said, “The idol of the Chinese president has been burned today because of China’s evil eye on Nepal and if China does not return our land from now on, we will be forced to agitate against China across the country.” They chanted slogans against China, calling for an end to the undeclared blockade.

Residents of bordering areas of Humla also attended the demonstration. The locals of Humla accused China of encroaching on Nepal’s land.
Kotanwa Tamang, a local of the Humla residing near border checkpoint, said China built new pillars and built buildings and fences on Nepali land. He said, “China encroached Nepal’s land; the old pillar has been removed unilaterally. While placing pillar no 12, they did it without informing the people’s representatives and in absence of locals.”
He added, “Chinese police come and threaten us. They don’t listen to us. They do whatever they want at the border. This alone proves that Nepali land has been encroached upon.”

Similarly, according to another local, China has erected a fence on Nepal’s land. The locals said, “There was neither building nor fence 3-4 years ago in Lalongjong in Lapcha area of Limi area of Ward No. 6 of Namkha Rural Municipality on Nepali land. Now fence and structures have been visibly erected.”
Similarly, Namkha Rural Municipality Vice-Chairperson Pema Tamang also said that the buildings were built on Nepali land. Although the buildings are on Nepali land, but when KP Oli’s government hastily said that the land was owned by China, locals were worried and outraged, he said.

Paljor Tamang, ward chairperson of Namkha-6, said that the Chinese had built buildings in Lalungjong about a kilometer and a half inside Nepali territory.
Similarly, another government report mentioned that China has encroached on 64 hectares of land in Nepal. A report of the survey branch under the Ministry of Agriculture states that China has encroached on Nepali land in 11 places in four districts.

It has been found that 6 hectares of land in Bhangdare river of Humla and 4 hectares of land in Karnali have been encroached by China. Similarly, China has encroached on 2 hectares of Sanjen river in Rasuwa, 1 hectare in Bhurjug river and 3 hectares in Jambu river. There is also a problem in Lemde river.

There is border issue with China in Kharane River of Sindhupalchowk (7 hectares land), Bhotekoshi (4 hectares), Sankhuwasabha’s Sumjung River (3 hectares), Kamkhola (2 hectares) and Arun River (4 hectares). According to the report, Nepal’s territory has fallen to China due to the rivers’ course change.
