Nepal Public Health Association demands to annul mid-term elections

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Public Health Association (NEPHA) has demanded to stop the announced mid-term elections saying it might increase the risk of pandemic spread in the country.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, NEPHA appealed the civil society and intellectuals to unit to stop the mid-term elections.

“It is against the spirit of the Constitution and the Health Sector Reform Ordinance that at a time to declare a public health emergency, the country has been pushed for election.”

The association has feared that holding the election during the epidemic will increase the risk of a third wave of infection and might kill thousands of Nepalis.

“There is a high risk of the pandemic spread due to the activities of the national election,” NEPHA said, adding, “It will not be practical to hold election when the state mechanism will be mobilized to conduct the election.”

The statement added that the cost of the election would affect the country’s economy which would be a lack of resources for vaccine and other health essentials.
