Effective implementation of law to end VAW: President Bhandari



KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said effective implementation of laws is imperative to end all sorts of violence against women (VAW).

Giving a message of best wishes on the occasion of 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women today, President Bhandari wished success of the activism. Various programmes are being organized with the national resolution of ‘ending VAW from home’.

“Constitution of Nepal has made resolution to build an equitable, prosperous and just society based on the principles of proportional system, inclusion and participation,” she reminded, adding that noticeable participation of women in people’ elected institutions and in politics have caused the wave of women empowerment.

However, she expressed worry over various social evils as Chhaupadi, allegation of practice of witchcraft, discrimination against women, superstition that have plagued the lives of many women in Nepal.

Activism is important for massive public awareness at household and community level against such social evils and anomalies. President Bhandari underscored the need for making women financially self-reliant.

She urged one and all to contribute to making just, civilized and prosperous society.
