Public transport fare goes up as Dashain nears

KATHMANDU: The government has introduced a new fare for public transport across the country.

The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management has stated that the new fare has taken effect across the country starting Friday.

In the past, when determining the fare of public transport, the share of fuel was 35 percent and the share of other indicators was 65 percent, the department said. Currently, petrol and diesel prices have also gone up.

The DoTM has stated that the prevailing fare has been increased based on the current price of the fuel indicator in the ‘calculation chart’ keeping other indicators unchanged.

The department has clarified that the fare has been adjusted in line current price hike. The short, medium and long-route fares have been fixed separately. According to the new fare, passengers going to Ilam from Kathmandu will have to pay Rs 1,691 while the fare for Kathmandu to Kakadbhitta is fixed at Rs 1,470.

The department has adjusted fares for a total of 286 routes across the country. The department has increased fares by 28 percent for passenger vehicles, 20 percent for cargo vehicles operating on hilly roads and 26 percent for freight vehicles operating on the roads in terai region.
