FNJ demands immediate release of Ujyalo Network’s arrested journos

KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists’ (FNJ) has called for immediate and unconditional release of the arrested journalists Anish Tamang and Durgalal Tamang.

Issuing a press note Sunday, FNJ stated that its serious attention was drawn to the arrests of Editor of Ujyalo Network Online Tamang from his office in Anamnagar, and the network’s General Manager Durgalal Tamang from Basundhara.

FNJ views the police move of arrest as an attack on the freedom of the press. It reminds that in case there are grievances regarding a published content, there are certain methods and procedures for expressing dissatisfaction with the news. And police should not make arrests by entering media houses.

In Ujyalo Network’s context, it noted that Patan High Court on Friday issued an order asking authorities’ not to arrest the petitioners, including journalist Tamang, until the issue is resolved. Moreover, the Press Council Nepal also settled the issue saying the news published online was within its jurisdiction.

“The FNJ draws the attention of the government and all its subordinate bodies for the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested journalists Anish Tamang and Durgalal Tamang. Otherwise, the federation wants to warn that it will be forced to join the movement,” reads the press note.
