All hell breaks loose if bid to split UML initiated: Leader Basnet

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet has warned of mayhem if plots were hatched with the intention of splitting his party.

Addressing a program held to announce Kathmandu Valley command (valley-level committee) of the recently revived Youth Force — youth wing of the UML — in Babar Mahal, Kathmandu, Saturday, Basnet said the incumbent ruling coalition was conspiring to overturn decisions, including political appointments, made by UML Chairman KP Oli-led government and that an ordinance could be issued to split his party.

“Earlier, when we tried to bring an ordinance to strengthen the UML, our bid failed. However, if an ordinance is brought to split the UML now, the whole country will be on fire,” he said. Leader Basnet also urged the ruling coalition not to mull over impeaching the president.

Basnet claimed that the current ruling coalition had the support of only 129 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, the CPN-Maoist Center and the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Upendra Yadav faction.

It is remarkable that UML Chairman had proposed ordinance first to split erstwhile ruling Nepal Communist Party and later to UML itself so that UML’s Khanal-Nepal faction could be sidelined officially.
