Supreme Court issues show cause notice in writ filed by Charles Shobraj

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a show cause notice to the government in relation to the detention of French national Charles Sobhraj.

A bench of SC judge Anil Kumar Sinha on Thursday sought legal grounds for imprisoning Shobraj, who has been kept at Jagannath Deval Prison in Kathmandu.

Shobraj filed a habeas corpus writ on Wednesday, seeking to be released citing his old age and having served half of his sentence.

Sobhraj, who has earned the notorious title of serial killer, has named the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Prison Management, District Administration Office, Kathmandu, and Prison Office, Jagannath Deval as defendants in the writ.
