Will not press for consensus but election must be won: UML Chairman Oli

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has said that he will not even ask for consensus in the selection of leadership in the party’s 10th General Convention.

Speaking to the editors and media persons on Tuesday, the UML Chair said that it was good to go together, but he would not say anything as his remark could be regarded as a pressure for a consensus.

“It would be better if one has to be requested for certain posts on the basis of their performance; however, in democracy, the comrades are free to contest for any post. When there are many vying for the same posts, it is better to have an election,” he said, adding, “I will not push for consensus, nor will I take the policy of promoting multiple candidacy under the name of democracy.”

Oli said that the people vying for leadership has to prove their public support by winning the election as he would not be favoring any.

Meanwhile, he also challenged Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to hold Maoists General Convention in his constituency. The UML is set to hold its general convention in Prachanda’s constituency in Chitwan.
