UML holds its convention in some 6,000 wards across country

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has held its convention in some 6,000 wards across the country on Saturday. UML office secretary Sher Bahadur Tamang said the convention of about 6,000 ward committees started on Saturday with exception of some districts due to floods and landslides.

“We have a preliminary assessment that about 6,000 ward committee conventions have been held and details are being collected,” he said.

A ward committee has 31 members including a chairperson, a vice-chairperson, a secretary and two deputy secretaries. A 31-member committee will be elected in rural municipals and municipals, a 41-member committee in the sub-metropolis and a 51-member committee in the ward committee of the metropolis.

There are 6,743 wards across the country. Ward convention was inaugurated virtually by UML Chair KP Oli from the party’s central office in Thapathali. In each committee, the party has mandated 33 percent women’s participation.

The ward-level convention serves as a precursor to UML’s national general convention. UML will hold a municipal convention on October 26. The 10th National General Convention of the CPN-UML is scheduled to be held in Chitwan from November 26 to 29.
