JSP’s Mahantha Thakur camp knocks SC door against EC

Demands revocation of Thursday's EC order

KATHMANDU:  Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Mahanta Thakur faction has gone to the Supreme Court (SC) against the Election Commission (EC)’s Thursday’s order to settle the party dispute through ‘head count’ of the officials at the time of party unity.

Mahanta Thakur’s faction has filed a writ petition at the apex court prior to EC’s final verdict. Pradip Kumar Pathak of Mahottari has filed the writ petition on behalf of JSP Chairman Mahanta Thakur.

The writ petition demanded that the order issued by EC summoning office-bearers and members of the Executive Committee for a head count should be revoked.

Earlier, EC had ordered both sides to show themselves before the commission on Monday, July 26, along with the original copy of their identity card or the voter ID card.

“Regarding the political registration of JSP, which was formed after the unification of the two parties, it is seen that the proposed central office-bearers and members were registered with the EC on June 26, 2020,” the EC’s Thursday verdict said.

It added, “As verification of members of the Central Executive Committee in person is seen rational for the purpose of settling the dispute related to the authenticity of the party, as per the Clause 44 (6) of the Act relating to the Political parties 2016, the EC summons both the parties to appear before it on Monday, July 26 at 11:00 am with the original copy of their identity card or the original copy of the voter ID card.”
