Opposition leaders discussing legal action against House dissolution

KATHMANDU: The opposition political parties are likely to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court either on Sunday or Monday against Prime Minister KP Oli’s move to dissolve the parliament.

Leaders of the opposition parties — Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center, UML’s Madhav Kumar Nepal faction, and Upendra-Baburam faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party — are holding a meeting today to discuss the issue and their future move.

According to a leader, the meeting will discuss the preliminary writ prepared by the lawyers.

In addition, signatures on the writ petition will also be collected, sources said.

Signatures of as many as 149 lawmakers will be collected. However, some lawmakers out of the Kathmandu Valley and some of the lawmakers, especially from the UML’s Madhav Kumar Nepal faction, are unlikely to sign the document.

They are preparing to move the Supreme Court by Monday if they succeeded in collecting signatures by today.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had dissolved the parliament on Saturday early morning and announced mid-term elections for November 12 and November 15 on the recommendation of the cabinet.
