Tourism Department starts issuing license to mountain guides

KATHMANDU: The Department of Tourism (DoT) has started distributing license to mountain guides Tuesday.

The DoT has issued the first license to mountaineering expert Kami Rita Sherpa, who holds the record for most ascents to Mount Everest.

The DoT has started providing license to mountain guides in its effort to regulate the tourism sector and make it professional, according to DoT Director Mira Acharya.

The license will have validity of five years.

The DoT had called for applications for mountain guide license on March 14.

Kami Rita Sherpa was the first one to submit the application and get the license.

Over 200 guides have applied for the license, as per DoT.

The process to verify and approve applications was underway, said Acharya.
