Election Commission holding local level election on May 3

KATHMANDU: Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya has said that the commission is preparing to hold the elections at all 753 local levels on May 3, 2022, as the current five-year term of the people’s representative is coming to an end.

Speaking at a two-day ‘Workshop on Election Operation and Management’ organized by EC at Dhulikhel, Kavre Wednesday, the Chief Election Commissioner remarked that one could not imagine the posts of people’s representative lying vacant at local bodies.

“We cannot imagine leaving the posts of local government lying vacant, so the election has to be held on time,” Chief Commission Thapaliya said, adding, “Besides, there is no provision to extend the tenure of the representatives in the local government.”

He said that the commission was preparing to make a recommendation to the government to fix the date of local elections at the earliest.

Stating that EC has already initiated the task of handing over new people’s representatives and new leadership by holding elections for the posts of province assembly, house of representatives, and president and vice-president in all the provinces by February 2023, he urged the media to assist the commission to conduct the election in a clean, free, fair, credible and economical manner.
