Speaking at a press conference on Sunday UML’s Lumbini PP alleged that Speaker Gharti did not behave as per his post.

UML had recommended disciplinary action to remove Ajay Shahi and Bimala Oli, the lawmakers who won the election under the UML’s election symbol. However, the UML became infuriated after the speaker sent a letter saying that no action would be taken against the lawmakers for the action sought against them contradicts with the Clause 35 of Acts relating to Political Parties, 2017.

The UML has said that the Speaker acted contrary to the values of the parliamentary system by behaving unilaterally like a party cadre instead of behaving in a manner befitting the position and dignity of the speaker.

“The Speaker made an arbitrary decision even though a letter was sent seeking action to Shahi and Oli requesting for their implementation,” the UML said, adding, “We feel that the Speaker’s decision goes beyond his jurisdiction and is an authoritarian character.”

The UML has demanded the dismissal of Speaker Purna Bahadur Gharti on the basis of morality.

Irate after then Chief Minister Shanker Pokhrel lost the majority and had to resign, the UML has been protesting seeking action against the defecting lawmakers. The party has warned to halt the province assembly unless the action is taken against them.
