Lumbini Province Speaker refuses to take action against UML lawmaker Shahi

KATHMANDU: Speaker Purna Bahadur Gharti has ruled that Lumbini Province Assembly member Ajay Shahi, who had won the election taking CPN-UML’s election symbol the Sun cannot be removed from the parliamentary seat.

Writing a letter to CPN-UML’s parliamentary party (PP) in the Province on Saturday, Speaker Gharti informed that after consulting the documents submitted by Province lawmaker Shahi and the letter sent by UML chief-whip in the province Bhumiswor Dhakal, he has decided not to notify that action has been taken against Shahi.

“After a thorough study of the documents sent by UML and lawmaker Shahi, the Speaker, based on Clause 35 of the Act relating to the Political Parties, 2017, has decided not to notify the assembly about the action taken against lawmaker Shahi,” the Speaker’s letter said.

Speaker’s refusal to act as per sought by UML automatically results in letting Shahi perform his duty as lawmaker.

Shahi of Hridayesh Tripathi group had contested the province assembly election in 2018 taking UML’s election symbol the sun. He is from Nawalparasi Bardaghat Susta West.
